baouchya : Let's say I want to compare several hand-drying methods. There's no need to carry out an LCA to compare a paper towel, about 2 grams, and an electric appliance, about several kilos of plastic and steel. The towel is bound to have less impact. It is more relevant to compare these two products to satisfy a need: for example, drying one pair of hands. This notion is called the Functional Unit, and its determination is imposed by the ISO LCA standard. The Functional Unit is defined as a quantified performance of a product system intended to be used as a reference in an LCA. The Functional Unit therefore corresponds to a function which will serve as the basis for the LCA. Once the Functional Unit has been established, we need to determine what is required to satisfy it. The ISO standard calls this notion a Reference Flow. It defines them as “measure of process outputs, in a given product system, required to fulfill the function as expressed by the functional unit”. They are therefore calculated from the Functional Unit. In the case of hand drying, the Functional Unit chosen was “drying a pair of hands”. If a paper towel is used, the number needed to satisfy this function must be determined. If we use an electric hand dryer, we need to determine not only the energy required for drying, but also the fraction of the appliance used. This is because only a part of the appliance is used. This is calculated as the fraction of time in use divided by the total lifetime of the appliance. In this way, the LCA will compare the impact of these two FRs, calculated according to a UF, and not directly the products. ----------------------- Imaginons que je cherche à comparer plusieurs appareils pour se sécher les mains. Il n’est pas utile de réaliser une ACV pour comparer une serviette en papier (2g) et un appareil électrique (plusieurs kilos de plastique et d’acier). La serviette aura forcément moins d’impacts. Il est d’avantage pertinent de s’intéresser à la comparaison de ces deux produits pour satisfaire un besoin : par exemple, sécher une paire de main. Cette notion s’appelle l’UF, sa détermination est imposée par la norme ISO ACV. L’UF est définie comme « une performance quantifiée d'un système de produits destinée à être utilisée comme unité de référence dans une analyse du cycle de vie ». L’UF correspond donc à une fonction qui servira de base à l’ACV. Une fois l’UF établie, il faut déterminer ce dont on a besoin pour la satisfaire. La norme appelle cette notion : un FR. Elle les définit comme «mesure des extrants des processus, (…), nécessaire pour remplir la fonction telle qu'elle est exprimée par l'unité fonctionnelle». Ils sont donc calculés à partir de l’UF. Dans le cas du séchage de main, l’UF retenue était « sécher une paire de main ». Si on utilise une serviette en papier, il faut déterminer le nombre nécessaire pour satisfaire cette fonction. Si on utilise un sèche main électrique, il faut déterminer l’énergie nécessaire au séchage mais aussi la fraction d’appareil utilisé. En effet, on ne se sert que d’une partie de l’appareil. On l’a calcule comme la fraction du temps d’utilisation par la durée totale de vie de l’appareil. Ainsi l’ACV va comparer l’impact de ces deux FR, calculé selon une UF, et non directement les produits.
